Get out your jumpsuits and legwarmers; we're going back to the 80s! I am a huge fan of classic 80s music, so here are some of the most renowned names and songs of the music industry, ranked from 5 to 1.
5. Cyndi Lauper
Time After Time- 1983
Cyndi Lauper is a full-out 80s icon with her wacky hair and never-ending jewelry. Her extroverted personality screams "Yolo," just like her biggest hit, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. Almost every sleepover I've ever been to has had this song playing in the background at some point.
Total Eclipse of the Heart- 1983 (this music video cracks me up, but the song is on fire)
Holding Out for a Hero- 1984
While Jim Steinman produced both Total Eclipse of the Heart and Holding Out for a Hero, it was Bonnie Tyler's unique vocal chords that brought them to life. I was first introduced to Holding Out for a Hero after watching the fairy godmother's performance in Shrek 2.
3. Elton John
Tiny Dancer- 1972
I'm Still Standing- 1983
Similar to my experiences with Shrek 2, I learned about Elton John through movies. Taron Egerton stars in the 2017 comedy, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, along with Elton John, who makes a few special appearances in the movie. Quite ironically, Egerton later stars as a teenage gorilla in the animated musical called Sing, and performs I'm Still Standing by Elton John.
2. Whitney Houston
I have always admired Whitney Houston's powerful vocal chords. Her songs reach octaves I never knew even existed. One of Whitney's most popular songs, I Will Always Love You, was originally written by my favorite artist, Dolly Parton.
1. Michael Jackson
Thriller- 1982
Beat It- 1982
Billy Jean- 1983
Smooth Criminal- 1988
Man in the Mirror- 1988
Who doesn't know the King of Pop? Michael Jackson was a child prodigy at age 12 after releasing I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause with his brothers (the Jackson Five). He then continued to produce hit after hit until his tragic death in 2009.
Shout Out to Dolly Parton
Dumb Blonde- 1967
Jolene- 1974
I Will Always Love You- 1974
Here You Come Again- 1977
9 to 5- 1980
There Was Jesus- 2019
Most of Dolly's best songs were released in the 1970s, but as one of my favorite artists, I think she deserves an honorable mention.
